Grinnell Mutual Group Foundation donates to Second Mile

The Grinnell Mutual Group (GMG) Foundation is partnering with Grinnell’s locally operated thrift shop, Second Mile, by providing a three-year, $3,000 grant toward its Capital Building Fund Campaign.  A 501(c)3 organization, Second Mile is raising funds to expand its current building to provide better access for people with disabilities, more space for large household items, and a more effective, energy-efficient layout.  The addition is complete, but the organization still needs almost $40,000 to complete its $200,000 goal.
“Second Mile plays an important role in serving people in our area.  The GMG Foundation is pleased to support Second Mile as an organization that helps our local community,” said Barb Baker, advertising and community relations manager at Grinnell Mutual.

Since 2003, Second Mile has donated more than $65,000 to charitable organizations in Poweshiek County.  In addition, the association provides needed items to families and individuals in crisis circumstances, as well as to schools, nursing homes, and other local organizations at no charge.

“Second Mile is a unique charitable organization that keeps all proceeds in our local communities, helping area families.  We depend on the generosity of local citizens to donate good, used items or volunteer their time, and our low prices ensure customers get great deals when shopping at the store,” says Lori Smith, Second Mile board member and Grinnell Mutual employee.  It’s really a win-win situation.  All donations truly do go the second mile.”

The Second Mile is located at 515 3rd Avenue in Grinnell and is open Monday through Friday from 9-5 and Saturday from 9-noon.  If you are interested in contributing to the building addition, please send your donation to the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation, PO Box 344, Grinnell, IA 50112.  Be sure to note Second Mile in the memo line of your check.
