Grinnell Mutual recognizes Life Safety Achievement Award winners
For more than 19 years, the Life Safety Achievement Award has recognized fire departments across the United States for actively promoting fire prevention. In the fall of 2011, 38 fire departments earned this award for their fire prevention accomplishments in 2010. With 1.3 million fires and more than 3,000 civilian deaths reported in the U.S. in 2010, the efforts of these fire departments are a significant contribution to the safety of their communities. (Statistics according to reports from fire departments and data reported to the National Fire Protection Association.)
“Many fire deaths could be prevented. At Grinnell Mutual, we are glad to support the Life Safety Achievement Award because it recognizes and encourages fire departments to reach out to their local communities with life safety programs. These programs save lives,” said Alan Clark, the assistant vice president of Special Investigations at Grinnell Mutual.
To qualify for the award, fire departments must record no fire deaths in residential structures or a 10 percent reduction of fire deaths from the prior year. In addition, they must demonstrate commitment to prevent residential fires in their local communities through effective fire prevention programs. The fire prevention efforts of winning fire departments include fire safety inspections, emergency evacuation drills, fire extinguisher training, safety newsletters, targeted training to service providers of at-risk populations, CPR and first-aid classes, free smoke alarm and installation assistance programs, home safety surveys, and working to pass a local ordinance that requires the installation of hardwired detectors with battery back-up as well as other educational programs that reach thousands of citizens each year.
This award is sponsored through the partnership of the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) Fire Research and Education Foundation, Residential Fire Safety Institute (RSFI), and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. Fifteen fire departments within Grinnell Mutual’s 12-state writing territory earned the Life Safety Achievement Award.
